Júlia Balassa
Textile Artist
I was born on October 17, 1960, in Budapest. After completing my studies at the Hernád Street Music Elementary School, I graduated in 1979 from the Secondary School of Fine and Applied Arts, majoring in painting. In 1987, I earned my degree from the College of Applied Arts in the Department of Hand-Painted and Printed Materials, studying under Csaba Polgár.
I am someone who seeks and perceives the deeper connections of the world. Drawn by my philosophical nature, I am inspired by eternal and transcendental themes, which I often explore through the lens of contemporary issues characteristic of our time. This apparent duality runs through all of my work.
The hidden realms of the Universe—those that cannot be expressed in words or approached through logic—fascinate me. My lifelong pursuit is the intuitive exploration of the spiritual self, or essence. How can the Infinite and Boundless be expressed within the finite framework of human life? What can our personal experiences and insights contribute to the collective body of human knowledge and culture? I believe our sacred traditions and spirituality can serve as a compass, guiding our inner orientation.
My aim is to engage the higher intelligence within us through a condensed visual language and the orchestration of colors, elevating it through catharsis. The value of any human creation—whether a work of art or otherwise—is determined by the depth of spiritual truth it conveys. For me, creation is not only a way of life but also a path toward the ascension of the soul.
From 1987 to 2000 – My “Wandering Years”
I lived with my husband, a theoretical physicist, in various European countries for both shorter and longer periods, including Ireland, France, and Germany. These travels strongly influenced the themes and style of my early works.
Since 2000, I have entered an intensive phase of creation.
I began with watercolors, experimented with acrylic painting and French tapestry weaving, and ultimately found the fullest expression of my artistic voice in silk painting. I create works for private commissions, group and solo exhibitions, as well as for galleries.
My works can be found not only in Hungary but also in the United States, China, Japan, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Transylvania.
I have always been drawn to filmmaking, and my travels inspired me to capture my experiences. Writing soon accompanied filmmaking, and through these three art forms I would like to express my thoughts and feelings in the future. My films can be viewed on my own YouTube channel.
